Is It safe to Spray Water on the Engine?

When do you ever pop your hood? Have you seen how dirty your engine bay is?

Probably the only time you check your engine bay is when you are going to check your oil, or work under your hood.

The engine bay can be over looked when cleaning your vehicle. It can get out of hand and has lots of dust, dirt, leaks and oil leaks.

Now to the question, Is it safe to clean your engine?

If you want to thoroughly clean your engine then you would want to use a pressure washer rather than a hose. Why is that?

Because a hose sprays water into the the engine and with a pressure washer gives a finer and smaller actual quantity of water while at the same time taking off dirt better than a hose.

Modern cars such as a 2020 Hellcat, Mustang, Honda, and Toyota are almost bullet proof when it comes to cleaning. Cars from the 80s or 90s are a bit more tricky because it has a higher chance to light up your dash like a Christmas tree.

Before getting started you would want to inspect the engine to check for any concerns or cautions that you need to watch out.

What are some cautions and concerns to look out for?

Things such as the fuse box and the engine components and the cold air intake. You would want to cover those areas up with a towel, plastic bag or wrap it so it does not get wet.

If you want to more careful then wrap it with tape so the bag will not come out during the washing process.

Steps on how to clean your engine

  1. Cover all the concerns and cautions that you may have with the engine so it can be protected and not light your engine like a Christmas tree.

  2. You would want to spray it with a pressure washer to get most of the dirt and grime out so it can be easier cleaner. Keep the water moving don’t spray down one place only so you can make sure to keep as much water out as possible.

  3. Use all Purpose Cleaner and variety of brushes so we can get into all the cracks and small components. You will not be able to all of the engine cleaned but about 90%

  4. After it has been cleaned with all brushes then you can spray it down with the pressure washer to get rid all the dirt and all purpose cleaner.

  5. After it has been sprayed down, you can dry it with towels and try to dry most of it and get all the water out. Or you can get your leaf blower and and blow all the air out for a faster and efficient way.

  6. Once you dry the vehicle now you can be able to dress the engine with some engine protection or dressing so all the black plastic can shine and looked like new.

Other than that, you are pretty much safe when it comes to cleaning your engine. We have done several Engine Cleaning at this point and with the easy steps being followed we have had no problem.

Once You’re Done, Inspect your Engine

You are done! Now you can take off all the bags or anything you wrapped. Turn on the car and let the engine run for about 5 to 10 mins.

With the engine running it will get rid of the water that is still standing underneath the hood and since the engine is hot it will get all the last bits of water out of the engine.

Don’t worry your engine is still running. Don’t have to be nervous anymore.

If you are still afraid to this process yourself, you can check out our page so we can schedule you for an appointment! This will also be great to be paired up with a Premium Wash or a Mini-Interior Cleaning so your exterior and interior can look great again.
